Henryk Opieński
Henryk Opieński, born January 13, 1870 in Kraków was a Polish composer, conductor, and musicologist. His teachers include Wicenty Singer, Ferdinand Lachner, Władysław Górski (violin), Władysław Żeleński, Zygmunt Stojowski, Heinrich Urban, and Vincent d’Indy (composition), Arthur Nikisch (conducting), and Hugo Riemann (musicology). He was a lifelong friend of Ignacy Paderewski, who also funded his studies in Berlin. Opieński was primarily a performer and played in the Warsaw Philharmonic and conducted several orchestras associated with theaters in Warsaw. He also taught at the Warsaw Music Society and Warsaw Institute of Music. From 1914-19, Opieński lived in Switzerland and in 1920, he moved to Poznań and was the director of the conservatory. He returned to Switzerland in 1926, settling in Morges and continued his musical activities there. From 1932-36, he managed the Société Vaudoise de Musique and died in Morges in 1942.
His compositions remain not well-known but he wrote at least 29 songs and published two albums of Polish folk songs arrangements.
