Marian Gawalewicz

Marian Gawalewicz (October 21, 1852 - May 26, 1910) was a Polish playwright, novelist, journalist, and translator. He was born in Lviv (modern-day Ukraine) and studied at the Technical Institute in Kraków and Jagiellonian University. He worked as the artistic director of the Folk Theater in Warsaw from 1899 until 1901 after completing his military service in 1876. He was very active in the cultural life of Warsaw, collaborating with local journals publishing reviews and his own works. Gawalewicz reported on the cultural life in Warsaw from “the perspective of a salon,” but held a great passion for theater. He was the director of the Teatr Wielki in Łódź from 1903, and opened the first private theater in Warsaw in 1906. Gawalewicz was invited to be the director of the municipal theater of Lviv by Ludwik Heller, but died a few months after taking the position.
