Jan Gall
Jan Gall (b. Aug. 8, 1856) was a composer, choral conductor, and music critic from Lviv in modern-day Ukraine. His music education consists of music theory and piano in Krakow and conservatories in Vienna and Munich. Gall led choirs in Kraków, Lipsk, and Weimar prior to returning to Lviv, where he became the conductor of the city’s music society. During this time (1884), Jan Gall also began working as singing and theory pedagog and music journalist for the Lviv Gazeta. Gall also taught at conservatories in Kraków and Wrocław. Eventually, Gall returned to Lviv again after traveling to Switzerland, Germany, and Italy to lead the singing ensemble “Echo” and resumed his work as a journalist and composer. In the last years of his life, Gall struggled to make a living and primarily worked correcting the mistakes of amateur composers.
Gall’s compositional output consists primarily of two kinds of songs--solo voice and piano and choral. Jan Gall authored over 400 songs, choruses, and quintets. While his solo songs were initially very popular, they have largely fallen out of the standard repertoire.
Jan Gall died October 30th, 1912.
