Zygmunt Noskowski

Born in Warsaw on May 2nd, 1846, Zygmunt Noskowski was a prominent composer, conductor, pedagog, and publisher. He studied violin originally with Jan Hornziel and later at the Institute of Music in Warsaw under Apolinary Kątski. Noskowski also studied harmony with Stanisław Moniuszko and singing with Franciszek Ciaffei. From 1872-75, Zygmunt Noskowski studied instrumentation and composition in Berlin with Richard Wüerst Friedrich Kiel, respectively, with support from the Warsaw Music Society. Noskowski played in the orchestra of the Teatr Wielki in Warsaw from 1867, and performed as a singer and pianist and taught at the Institute for the Blind.

In 1870, Zygmunt Noskowski was a music critic for the Warsaw Courier. However, Noskowski’s attempts to find a permanent job in Warsaw were a failure, but he did obtain a post in Germany as the city music director and conductor of the Bodan Singing Society in Konstanz. While under his supervision, the ensemble achieved the status of the best choral group in Baden. Noskowski eventually returned to Warsaw in 1881, where he succeeded Władysław Żeleński as the director for the Warsaw Music Society. During his tenure, Noskowski was responsible for the reconstruction of musical life in Warsaw which faced censures from the tsarist government. From 1886, Zygmunt Noskowski taught composition at the Institute of Music in Warsaw. Some of his students include Mieczysław Karłowicz, Karol Szymanowski, Ludomir Różycki, Apolinary Szeluto, and others.

Zygmunt Noskowski died on July 23rd, 1909 in Warsaw and is buried at Powązki Cemetery.
