Emanuel Kania
Polish composer, pianist, and music critic Emanuel Kania was born on March 26, 1827, in Uszyce, Poland. He studied piano in Wrocław under Carl Schnabel and organ with J.F. Wolf. Between 1850 and 1852, Kania resided in Berlin, where he continued his studies while performing and publishing his first compositions. He returned to Warsaw in 1853, but went to Paris in 1857 and 1861 to study under Edward Wolff. Kania’s concert career took him across Germany, Belgium, Russia, France, and Poland. Emanuel Kania wrote over one hundred fifty compositions, many of which were written in the salon style. Kania also composed art songs and music to the vaudeville show, Werbel domowy. His composition style was influenced greatly by Chopin. Despite some of his works being published in Poland and Germany, the majority of his works remain unpublished in his manuscripts. Kania died on March 16, 1887 in Warsaw.
