Ignacy Komorowski

Ignacy Komorowski was a Polish composer, violinist, cellist and pianist. He was born in Warsaw on January 13, 1824. Komorowski’s musical training includes studying piano with Wincent Szanior, violin with Stefan Bułakowski and Jan Hornziel, and cello with Józef Szabliński and Adam Herman. Komorowski worked as a private music teacher and later returned to Warsaw to play cello in the Teatr Wielki orchestra. Komorowski also studied harmony and counterpoint with August Freyer and composition with Karol Kurpiński. Komorowski is largely known for his art songs, of which “Kalina” (words by Teofil Lenartowicz) remains in the canon of song repertoire. Much like Moniuszko, Komorowski incorporated Polish themes, national dances, and folk elements in his music. In 1852, Komorowski fell ill with tuberculosis and in 1856, he moved to Italy to improve his health. However, he returned to Poland in 1857 and died a few months later in Warsaw.
